Best place in the world!  We went every summer to dive and fish.

BK - West Palm Beach, FL

My husband and I had wonderful dive trips to Walker's in the 1990's.  The reefs were beautiful, with everything from tame groupers to sharks to wonderful, tiny invertebrates.  The dive crew (Gary & Barry) were instructive and friendly.  The hotel restaurant served up a great dish called lobster with champagne sauce, and the bartender concocted a lethal but delicious drink called the "Bees-whacker."  We even brought located on the island.  What great memories I have of Walker's.

Around 1970 I was working for a Company from Ft Lauderdale named RFA corp. The were a Plumbing Co. doing work in Fl. and at Walkers Kay. They asked me if I wanted to go there and work. I flew there on a plane owned by the General Contractor, a Twin engine Queen Air. I was a plumber/now retired and the plumber that was there needed some help. It was the best job I ever had. I worked at the New Hotel, the beach houses and even at the Big house on Grand Key. I was there when the Tanker pulled up with fresh water and filled up the new fresh water pool. I was probably one of the first people in it. I was there when we got up one morning and looked out at all the US Navy Ships that were around. Nixon was coming to stay with his friend BOB.

In the 1994 April Issue of Skin Diver we read about this awesome dive in a place called "Walkers Cay".  We heard about a thing called "Dive Shark Rodeo" where 100's of Sharks gather as the boat captain places a chumsicle in the water.  In 1995 we made the trip to the abaco islands - walkers cay. It truly was unbelievable!  We dove with Gary Adkison and Barry Albury. Barry did a video for us which I just recently viewed.  While it's somewhat out-dated (VCR) but still brings back memories of one of the greatest events I have ever experienced in my lifetime.  I remember a specific shark they named "freight train".  He was a 10' bull shark that seemed to dominate the
group.  When he approached the chumsicle the others shark parted.  The coolest part of this was he swam right under me and I ran my hand across his back.
I was sad to hear the island as we know it is no more.  I was talking with some other divers and directing them to inquire about this experience.  I guess all we have are memories of a wonderful trip.

My Walker's story - A few shots - the pictures tell the story! JM, Singer Island, Florida

I've only been to Walker's once - but what a trip! It corresponded with the arrival of Halley's Comet (a good omen?), which was clearly visible in the early morning sky. I spent my first day wading the flats around Walker's, where I saw the largest school of bonefish I've ever viewed. Several college students who accompanied me on the trip went snorkeling and caught lobsters which were prepared that night at the island's main restaurant. Day two was filled with SCUBA diving and underwater photography on nearby reefs. That night I met a couple of fellows who invited me aboard their boat for a day of fishing. We raised a blue marlin during the first hour of trolling, then visited some drop-offs west of Walker's and live-baited for groupers and snappers before finishing up the day with snorkeling for lobster and conch on some shallow reefs. We took our catch to Rosie's Place on nearby Grand Cay, where it was cooked by the staff and served with vegetables and other fixings. All told, it was an amazing experience - Walker's is about as idyllic a setting as one could wish for!

Walker's is my favorite place to dive. We were pretty sure this lobster knew it was off season because he just came out and watched us. Lots of hog snapper and lobster for great eating. Nice bone fish flat too. Look forward to future visits. RT Ft. Lauderdale.

We went to Walker's every summer up through 2004. The fishing was always good. We released many Blue Marlins like this one. Friends still go over on day trips and say the fishing is even better now but I like to go and stay for a while. Hope it comes back soon. Brad/Juno Beach

Three buddies and I on 2 cuddy-cabin boats went to Walker’s for a 4-day weekend to enjoy fishing and scuba diving. The second day, after some great diving, our wives flew over and brought us a couple of buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken for dinner. We were all enjoying the dinner, the amazing landscape, the sunset and the comradery. We had the boats rafted-together just offshore on the west side northwest of the marina. Some of the local sea gulls circling around us were likewise enjoying a couple of tidbits of the fried chicken, cannibals that they are, as we would toss them a little something here and there. I was sitting on the aft port gunwale of our boat without a shirt on taking it all in when all of a sudden I felt a few warm drops on my left shoulder then running down my back. Apparently, one of our sea gull friends circling overhead was likewise enjoying and relaxing in the moment and defecated on me. I did an immediate back entry into the water to clean up the situation. Of course upon breaking the surface I heard everyone in both boats laughing hysterically. Needless to say, this was the story of the weekend and to this day remains an item to discuss whenever Walker’s comes into our conversations.

A few years ago my wife and I were guests on a 48' Sea Ray Flybridge belonging to some good friends. We were on a 12-boat flotilla arranged by Executive Yachts out of Stuart. One of the island stops was Walker’s for 2 days. After an easy crossing we had the afternoon to relax and enjoy the bar and pool. It was at this time we discovered our new favorite island drink; the Kahlua Colada. Our trip organizers arranged to have the Kahlua Coladas flowing freely during our afternoon relaxation at the pool. From what my wife, our friends and I recall from that Walker’s afternoon, it was a very special time and wonderful memory to us all.
